Air tools
The use of compressed air as energy is very interesting. Indeed, these pneumatic engines of these tools are lightweight, compact and powerful. Moreover, it is a non-dangerous energy that can be used in a metallic environment without the risk of electric shock, as with the sector, in case of damaging the pipelines. These pipes are less manageable than wires. The biggest drawback is the noise level of the source, and sometimes of tools, even with a soundproof compressor.
We can draw a parallel with a generator powering a battery, which is then use for collecting energy. It is more meaningful for the auto mechanics amateur than the explanations and examples presented below. The compressor is similar to a dynamo (or generator with rectifier), and the tank is the battery. As with a vehicle, the battery is there to ensure high flow rates over short (or less brief) periods, such as the use of the starter or the winch, while the generator must be able to provide the energy required for continuous operation of all accessories such as the ignition system and lighting.
Flow compressor is usually released in a selective way, according to standards designed especially to flatter the manufacturer, for example between 0 and 1 bar, or even worse, vacuum pressure without cons. The only way to know what a compressor has in its core is to time how long it takes to get its reserve volume from 6 to 8 bars. Any other indication of performance has absolutely no interest.
Indeed, when using such an air drill or other air tool like this for a long period, the compressor must be able to provide the requested data rate that can be very high: up to more than 600 liters per minute for a grinder. These tools have all but depleted efficiency when the pressure falls below 5 or 6 bars. We are then forced to wait for the tank to fill up again at an acceptable pressure, in case of insufficient debit. And do not believe that increasing the volume of the tank will change something: there is certainly a little more working time, but it will take even longer as the pressure rises. It is far better to have a compressor providing 200 liters / min with a 25 liter tank, than a compressor of 100 l / min with a 50 liter tank.
